LFC LADIES SIGN AUSTRALIAN STRIKER

Emily Gielnik

Emily Gielnik adds to strikeforce ahead of Arsenal game

Liverpool Ladies have signed Australian striker Emily Gielnik ahead of Sunday’s home game against Arsenal.

The forward has signed from Brisbane Roar, who finished second in the W League last season, as is in contention to make her debut for Liverpool this weekend.

Liverpool Ladies will take on last season’s treble winners at Skelmersdale United on Sunday, and are looking for their first home win of the season.

Gielnik, 19, who has been a regular part of the Australia U20 squad, has recently been called up to the senior national side. In last season’s W League campaign, she was the league’s second highest scorer with nine goals.

She said: “I’d always wanted to play overseas and when I heard that Liverpool were interested in signing me, and that I would have the chance to play in the WSL, I couldn’t turn it down.

“It’s a big move for me – not only have I travelled halfway around the world, but this league will be the highest standard of football that I have regularly played in. It will only help to improve my game and I can’t wait to get started.

“I know a little about Arsenal and they won a lot of trophies last season, so I know that it will be a hard game for us. Hopefully we can get a good result on Sunday and I can go on to make a real contribution to the team up front this season.”

Liverpool Ladies manager Robbie Johnson, said: “Emily is a great signing for us and a player that we’ve been tracking for some time. She’s a fast, talented striker with great potential, and will hopefully get us some crucial goals this season.”

Liverpool Ladies play Arsenal on Sunday 6 May 2012, 2pm KO at Skelmersdale United. Tickets are £4.50 for adults and entry is free for accompanied children.
