AROON ON THE OLYMPIC OPENER

Aroon Clansey

NZ goalkeeper Clansey on her country's chances at the Olympics

Ahead of today’s Olympics opener between Team GB and New Zealand, Football Ferns goalkeeper Aroon Clansey gives us her thoughts on the match:

“I’m really looking forward to today’s match and it has all the makings to be a very good game. Many people will expect Team GB to win, but I think New Zealand will do it.

“At the last world cup we played England and were 1-0 up until the 60th minute and ended up losing the game 2-1. Our players have improved since then and are playing in places like Germany and Sweden which have really strong leagues.

“Amber Hearn has been in great form lately, scoring plenty of goals in the lead up to the Olympics, and she’ll be an important player for us throughout the tournament. Ali Riley will also be a big player for us in defence.

“I think that we’ll get through to the knockout stages. We need to get a result today and win against Cameroon to give ourselves the best chance of progressing.

“It’s fantastic for the profile of women’s football that it’s opening the entire Olympics. I’ll be there watching and I’m looking forward to seeing the Team GB FAWSL players take to the pitch in front of so many people – but my loyalties are definitely with the Football Ferns!”
