#26 Auction Gathers Pace

some of the donated shirts

It is almost two months since the tragic shootings at Sandy Hook killing 26. In its small way, the football community is saying it cares by sending #26 shirts to Quinnipiac Uni. All auction proceeds going to a scholarship for pupils from Sandy Hook.

The response from the football community has been overwhelming with over 100 clubs and national teams promising to donate a#26 shirt to this worthy cause. As of today 33 shirts have been received, the majority of them signed by the players from the teams involved. Liverpool FC, Liverpool Ladies and England Women have all donated signed shirts.

The web site (www.SHES26soccer.com) is under construction and will go live by the end of the month. An online auction site,www.biddingforgood.com will be helping with the auction’s promotion and will be using all forms of media and social media throughout the process.

Sandy Hook Elementary is approximately 30 minutes from Quinnipiac University and has two close connections to their soccer program. The 2011 captain, Kyla Miles went to Sandy Hook and knows a number of the victims while the 2002 captain, Lauren Carmody lost her cousin Rachel D’Avino, a teacher, in the shooting.

Quinnipiac University will be collecting shirts through February because some national associations have committed to sending one of their shirts from this week’s round of international friendlies, World Cup qualifiers or African Cup of Nations games. The tentative plans are to post pictures of the shirts and host the auction in March or April.

If your club has not yet donated there is still time to show you care. Please send shirts to:

Dave Clarke, Head Women’s Soccer Coach, Quinnipiac University, NCAA I, 275 Mt. Carmel Avenue, Hamden, CT 06518, 203-582-5315.
